Major event highlights are still here. Not all events have been updated to 2007; be sure to notice dates, and use phone numbers supplied if out of date. You can highlight what you want and just print your selection, or print all.

50th Annual Cham Fashional (10/3/09) Sponsored by Quota International Fairbanks. "It's Good As Gold - Cham Turns 50!" Will be held at the Westmark Fairbanks Hotel Gold Room, 7:30 p.m. (cocktails - champagne & hors d'oeuvres), choreographed Fashion Show at 8 p.m.,  dance till 1 a.m. to live music.  This is an annual fundraiser for Quota International Fairbanks, whose special interest is disadvantaged women & children, and those with speech & hearing impairments. Come support a great community service organization while enjoying champagne, hors d'oeuvres, and great fashions, then dance the night away with the great live dance band "Nostalgic Jam".  Call 490-2325 for tickets; $75 per person or $650 for a table of 10. This is a fundraiser this year to benefit the Breast Cancer Detection Center.

HIPOW Public Auction (10/6-7/05) (see dinner auction later for 10/8) Monroe Catholic Junior Senior High School gym, 615 Monroe Street. Free admission, doors open @6 p.m., auction @ 7 p.m. More information on the auction will be posted on http://www.catholic-schools.org. A few days earlier there is usually an Art Preview Night, 5-7 p.m. to preview the art up for auction at HIPOW.

HIPOW Black Tie Dinner & Auction (10/8/05) By advance reservation only, tickets are $100 per seat. Saturday night the doors open at 5:30 p.m., dinner is at 6:30, and the auction begins at  7  p.m. Call 456-7970 for information and tickets. HIPOW is the largest fundraiser for catholic Schools of Fairbanks, with more than 2,500 donated items.

Focus on Fairbanks (Opened 10/14/02) Celebrate Alaska's Golden Heart City — Past, Present and Future There’s still gold in those hills! A hundred years after Felix Pedro struck gold in the hills north of town, Fairbanks is a thriving city ­ rich in culture and resources. Explore the Museum’s galleries to learn about the gold rush days, building the Alaska Highway, the aurora borealis ­ and what we’re planning for the future. In the Interior Gallery, UAF Museum. Goes at least through November; may be extended.

19th Annual Fbks International Friendship Day (10/15/05) noon to 5 p.m. Pioneer Park, Alaskan Centennial Center for the Arts. Free. Entertainment, music, cultural displays, food, and gifts for sale.(907) 474-0908.

Native Film Festival (10/16, 17, 19/06) Pioneer Park Theater, 6-10 p.m.  In conjunction with the Alaska Federation of Natives Convention in Fairbanks. Selections from the Alaska Center for Documentary Film will be shown. Free. (907) 474-7505.

Alaska Day! (10/18/09)

Oktoberfest (10/20/06) Sponsored by German Club of Fairbanks, American Legion Post 57, 1634 Cushman St. German food served 6-9 p.m. $15 single or $25 couple. Music, food and fun. (907) 452-5457.

Halloween Carnival (10/26/06) Sponsored by West Valley High School, an annual event. 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., all children through sixth grade, at West Valley7 High School. $1 per child. 1 can donation for the Fairbanks Community Food Bank buys 1 game ticket (two per child only).  (907) 474-4221, ext. 171.

“Reading From Alaska’s Heart Fundraiser”, (10/27/07) sponsored by Adult Learning Programs of Alaska (ALPA) featuring local writers reading from their works.  An evening venue of distinction for published writers, Reading From Alaska's Heart brings together several talents from Alaska to read from their works and fellowship with community members. This annual event serves as Adult Learning Programs of Alaska's major fundraiser and is supported by corporate, business and individual donors as well as our distinguished writers.  Refreshments and music will be provided. 7:00 pm at The Binkley Room, Pike’s Waterfront Lodge. Tickets in 2005 were are $20/person or $50/family and were available at ALPA, Owl Tree, If Only…A Fine Store, Hunting & Gathering and at the door. Fall Festival (10/31/10) A annual Christian alternative to trick-or-treat. Games, candy, fun. University Baptist Church (University Ave & Thomas Street, next to Sourdough Sams Cafe), 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Children are invited to wear their costumes (avoid witches and ghosts please). Supervised fun, with preschoolers in separate area. Lots of candy.  FREE

 Museum Halloween (10/31/07) 6 to 8 p.m. Annual event. Come in from the cold to go trick-or-treating at the Museum and see bugs, bats, birds and more emerge from the Museum’s collections. For costumed trick-or-treaters ages 12 and under with their adult chaperones. FREE!

University Women's Association Annual Christmas Bazaar (11/7, 8/09) Large popular bazaar featuring crafters from around Alaska for savvy Christmas shoppers. Over 100 vendors per day. Features food court, free admission and different crafters each day. Parking available at Farmers Loop lot with shuttle bus service to campus. Proceeds to benefit college scholarships, UAF Wood Center, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. (907) 456-4009.

Athabascan Fiddlers' Festival (11/6-9/02). Traditional Athabascan Indian fiddling and dancing. Dedicated to the tradition of Athabascan fiddling and dancing. Dancing, guitar-playing, fiddling and performances by village representatives. Athabascan Fiddlers Association. "The Athabascan Fiddlers Festival has grown tremendously over the past 20 years to become one of the three major cultural events of the year," according to festival founder, Jean Flanagan Carlo. Annual Auction/Light Dinner 11/9/02) Northern Alaska Environmental Center. Social hour begins at 6 p.m., auction at 7. Chena river Convention Center, $15 donation at door. To donate auction item or learn more, call (907) 452-5021 or email auction@northern.org.

Military Appreciation Day (11/12/05) Noon to 5 p.m. at the University of Alaska Museum of the North. The Museum salutes the Interior’s military personnel, veterans and their families. Explore the galleries, visit with Alaska Native artists, and enjoy hands-on ctivities for kids. FREE! (907) 474-7505.

Market Research Interviews (11/12,13/09) The marketers of Prilosec OTC® are looking for Fairbanks residents who suffer from frequent heartburn to participate in a market research project. If you have heartburn more than once a week, but won’t let it stand in the way of having a good time, then we want to hear from you! People who are interested must be willing to take Prilosec OTC, which will be provided free of charge, for two weeks, and then share their experiences with the marketing team. Candidates must be 18 years or older, have frequent heartburn, and currently not take a prescription medication for heartburn. A gift card will be provided for all who qualify for an interview.

The Holiday Marketplace (11/13-15/09) More than 175 vendors (crafts and artisans) from around the state. Carlson Center.  $4 admission, children 12 and under free. Tanana Valley 4H will be on hand to provide daycare on site. $5 per hour with all proceeds going to the club. SHOW DATES & HOURS:

 Top of the World Classic (11/21-24/02) The farthest north NCAA Division I Basketball Tournament, featuring teams this year from around the nation and the host UAF Nanooks. Annual St. Raphael's Christmas Ball and Auction (11/22/06) Westmark Hotel Gold Room; 6 p.m.-midnight. Fundraiser, quilt raffle, dancing, and a silent auction with over 700 items. Thanksgiving Day (11/26/09) HAPPY THANKSGIVING! Happy Thanksgiving!
If you happen to be in town for the holidays, check our restaurant page for your turkey dinner with all the fixings. Many churches will have special services on either Thanksgiving, or on Wednesday, the 26th.

UAF Museum Store Holiday Sale (11/29/02-12/24/02) Take care of everyone on your holiday shopping list at the Museum Store. All coiled grass, baleen, willow root and birch bark baskets – hand-made by Alaska Native artists across the state – are 20% off. Candle Lighting Service (12/06/09) Always the first Sunday in December. Celebrate the Christmas season in North Pole, Alaska. 2 p.m. at North Pole High School. Tree lighting same day at Santa's RV Park next to Santa Claus House, 5 p.m. (907) 488-2242. For over thirty years, North Pole has been holding this Candelighting Ceremony to begin the Christmas season. This is an important Chamber function.  The Program focus is on local children, and others who have made great contributions to the North Pole community. Each year an excellent show of talent and inspiration is planned. After the candelighting ceremony is finished there will be time for a little refreshment and mingling.

Georgeson Botanical Garden Holiday Sale (12/4/09) 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Main commons of University of Alaska Fairbanks Wood Center. Public is welcome to buy, but the sale is Not open to general public vendors. Vendors are specially chosen - UAF related, such as from Large Animal Research Station, Sea Grant, University of Alaska Press, & local student entrepreneurs specializing in Alaska-made and Alaska-grown items.
